I've read MANY MANY books on prayer, yet none have been able to capture the essence of prayer as Daniel Henderson's "Transforming Prayer." Not only does this book reveal the depths and simplicity of prayer, but it takes you on a step by step process on how to pray in a way that will dramatically change your life. Prayer isn't so much about changing things as it is about changing you, and Daniel Henderson walks you through the purpose and power of prayer so that your heart will capture God's.
I want to highlight some of my favorite points that the author makes in this book, as I believe it will encourage you to buy it and read on. Starting with the very basics, the author says, "All our praying may not please God if we do not pray in the faith that comes from the Word of God." (Romans 10:17) Mr. Henderson goes on to help us understand that "prayer is not asking God to do my will. It is bringing myself into conformity with His will. It is asking Him to do His will and to give me the grace to enjoy it. (John Macarthur) Or more deeply put, "Prayer is a means God uses to give us what he wants." (W. Bingham Hunter) I loved the quotes throughout this book! The author brings you to the heart of prayer which is realizing that prayer transpires when the two realities that I am needy and He is worthy meet. It's when our needs and His glory meet. He goes on to encourage you that you learn to pray . . . by praying. For those who need a "method," Mr. Henderson has developed an "Upward, Downward, Inward, Outward" technique in order to deeply pray through the Scriptures. He also elaborates on this by changing it up into a "Who, How, What, Where" method. These methods . . . the simplicity of the pattern, "allows you to sense the sufficiency of the Word and Spirit in your praying and in your living." The appendix is dedicated to teaching you how this method works by giving you incredibly examples to walk through.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the few pages dedicated to the topic, "If I Were the Devil." This section alone was worth purchasing the book! I would describe it as Daniel Henderson's "Screwtape Letters" (C.S. Lewis)- expanded addition on Prayer. Completely enlightening and powerful!
